PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA, Political alignments inside the Garden City reached a fever pitch this morning as stakeholders finalized strategies for the upcoming Rivers South-East senatorial district by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026. The election is set to replace the late Senator Barinada Mpigi.
Speaking to political correspondents in Port Harcourt early on June 9, 2026, APC Youth Leader for the district, Hon. Innocent Ajaelu, confirmed that the political parties under the Nyesom Wike-led "Rainbow Coalition" will run a joint structural front.
The strategic alliance features candidates from the APC (Osarosaka Erewari), PDP (Senator Olaka Nwogu), Labour Party (Sam Barikpia), and Action Alliance (Douglas Fabeke). Ajaelu noted that this by-election serves as a major test run for the coalition’s power grid ahead of the 2027 general elections, shifting the battle away from traditional single-party lines.
