In a bizarre turn of events that highlights the increasingly creative tactics used by criminal elements, the Rivers State Police Command has intercepted an illegal firearm ingeniously concealed inside a loaf of bread.
The recovery was made during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by police operatives along Azikiwe Road, near the Red Cross Junction, in Port Harcourt.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the operation was carried out under the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju. Officers intercepted a vehicle and, upon conducting a thorough search of its passengers, discovered a Browning pistol hidden within a loaf of bread belonging to one Braya Nanas, a resident of New Road, Borikiri.
Key details from the ongoing investigation include:
The Weapon: The recovered Browning pistol notably lacked a visible serial number, raising serious concerns regarding its origin and potential criminal history.
Suspect’s Statement: During interrogation, the suspect, Braya Nanas, allegedly admitted ownership of the firearm. He further claimed to have purchased the weapon in Okrika for the sum of ₦800,000.
Police Warning: Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju has commended his men for their vigilance while issuing a stern warning to the public. "Criminals are adopting increasingly deceptive methods to beat security checks," the CP noted, urging residents to remain hyper-vigilant.
The Command has specifically cautioned citizens against accepting, transporting, or storing parcels and items from others without verifying their contents, warning that such innocent acts could inadvertently facilitate criminal activity.
The investigation is currently ongoing as authorities seek to determine the intended use of the weapon and whether the suspect has links to broader criminal networks in the state.
