BILLE GAS SEEPAGE: Federal Government and Rivers State Government Intensify Emergency Response

The Federal Government has intensified its emergency intervention measures in response to the ongoing gas seepage crisis in the Bille Community of Degema Local Government Area, as fears over groundwater contamination and public health mount.

A high-level delegation, led by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Senator Ekperikpe Ekpo, visited the affected community today to conduct an on-the-ground assessment and distribute immediate humanitarian relief to displaced and impacted residents.

Government Response & Commitment

The visit by Senator Ekperikpe Ekpo underscores the gravity with which the Federal Government is treating the environmental incident. During the assessment, the Minister met with local leaders to review the extent of the impact on the community's water supply and livelihoods.

Federal Action: The Ministry is working in close collaboration with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and relevant industry operators to identify the source of the seepage and implement a permanent technical solution.

State-Level Support: Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to the people of Bille. The Governor has pledged direct support to ensure that, while technical investigations into the source of the gas continue, residents are not left without basic necessities.

Prioritizing Public Health

With concerns regarding the contamination of groundwater, the primary focus of the government remains the welfare of the Bille people:

Potable Water: Arrangements are being made to provide consistent supplies of clean, portable water to prevent water-borne illnesses in the community.

Medical Intervention: The Rivers State Ministry of Health has deployed emergency medical personnel to the area to provide essential services and monitor residents for any health complications arising from the gas exposure.

The Road Ahead

The situation remains a high priority for both state and federal authorities. While technical teams from the NUPRC work to contain the seepage, the government has urged residents to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols issued by environmental officials.

"We are here to ensure that no life is compromised," the ministerial delegation stated during the visit. "Our combined efforts with the state government will ensure that the Bille community is supported until the environment is once again safe."
