Imagine going missing at 14 years old, only to be found 18 years later in a correctional centre in your own city with no formal trial or legal representation.

This is the heartbreaking reality for Gospel Kinanee, a young Ogoni man who disappeared in 2007. For nearly two decades, his family searched tirelessly, visiting police stations and even checking the very same correctional centre twice, but found nothing because he had been booked under a different name: Baridi Sunday.

The Breakthrough:

Gospel was finally discovered and released alongside 20 other inmates during the Rivers State Jail Delivery Exercise, flagged off by the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi.

Sadly, the long years of undocumented detention have taken a massive toll. Reports state that Gospel Kinanee’s mental health is now the subject of ongoing litigation.
