Government Moves to Contain Bille Gas Seepage; Health and Water Relief on the Way

A high-level delegation from the Federal Government, led by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Senator Ekperikpe Ekpo, visited the Bille community in Degema Local Government Area this week to address the persistent gas seepage that has caused significant distress among residents.

The visit, which included top officials from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and industry operators, marked a significant step in the collaborative effort between federal and state authorities to mitigate the environmental and health impact on the community.

Emergency Response and Humanitarian Aid

During a stakeholder meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended the Federal Government’s swift response. Emphasizing his administration's commitment to the wellbeing of Bille residents, Governor Fubara issued an immediate directive to upgrade the Bille Primary Healthcare Centre. This facility will be bolstered to handle medical emergencies resulting from the gas incident, ensuring that those suffering from health complications such as reported skin rashes and respiratory discomfort receive urgent care.

The federal delegation also pledged a suite of immediate humanitarian measures to support the community, including:

Potable Water Supply: Recognizing that underground water sources have been contaminated, the government has committed to providing clean water to the community as a priority.

Medical Outreach: A comprehensive medical program featuring essential drugs and consumables is being deployed.

Infrastructure Support: Pledges have been made to provide firefighting equipment and support for improved power supply in the area.

Seeking a Lasting Solution

Addressing the Amanyanabo of Bille Kingdom, HRM Ingo Herbert, Senator Ekperikpe Ekpo assured the community that the investigation into the root cause of the seepage is a top priority. While noting that the lack of direct oil and gas infrastructure in the immediate vicinity has made initial investigations complex, he affirmed that technical experts are working "tirelessly" to identify the source.

Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, Chief Executive of the NUPRC, confirmed that an international firm has been engaged to conduct final, comprehensive studies on the site. Fieldwork for this investigation is scheduled to commence before the end of July.

"The safety of our people is paramount," Governor Fubara stated. "We are working hand-in-hand with federal authorities and industry operators to ensure that this situation is not only contained but permanently resolved."

Stay tuned to PORTHARCOURTBLOG as we continue to track the progress of the Bille remediation project and further government interventions.
