As the curtain draws on the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) in Port Harcourt, the Nigerian Army has left a significant footprint on the state’s development landscape, commissioning a series of high-impact infrastructure and humanitarian projects aimed at improving the quality of life for host communities.
The initiatives are part of a nationwide rollout of over 250 special intervention projects designed to foster community-military harmony and provide critical social amenities to underserved areas.
Empowering Communities through Infrastructure
The Army’s focus on sustainable development was prominently displayed through investments in water and education within Rivers State:
Access to Clean Water: Residents of Degema Local Government Area are breathing a sigh of relief following the installation of a new, state-of-the-art solar-powered borehole. The facility is expected to address long-standing water supply challenges, providing a clean and reliable source for the community.
Education Reform: Two key educational institutions have received a major facelift. The Community Secondary School, Rumuomasi in Obio/Akpor LGA and the Community Secondary School, Luusue in Khana LGA have undergone extensive renovations. These upgrades include modern classroom facilities and improved school environments, ensuring that students can learn in safe and conducive settings.
Enhancing Military Welfare
In addition to community-focused projects, the military has prioritized the welfare of its own personnel. The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, officially commissioned new, modern accommodation blocks at the 6 Division headquarters in Port Harcourt. These living quarters are designed to provide officers and soldiers with a more comfortable and dignified living environment, boosting morale and operational readiness.
A New Chapter for Civil-Military Relations
During the commissioning ceremonies, military leadership emphasized that these projects are a token of appreciation for the hospitality and cooperation the Nigerian Army has enjoyed from the people of Rivers State.
Local community leaders in Degema and Khana LGAs expressed their gratitude, noting that the projects serve as a tangible reminder of the military’s commitment to not only protecting the nation but also contributing to the societal well-being of the local populations they serve.
As NADCEL 2026 concludes today, these newly commissioned facilities stand as a lasting legacy, bridging the gap between national defense operations and local community development.
