Over the past several days, Port Harcourt has cemented its status as a vital nerve center for continental defense, hosting the 3rd Africa Land Forces Forum (ALFF 2026). The high-level gathering, which served as the strategic anchor for the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), brought together military commanders, defense ministers, and security experts from over 40 nations.
A Platform for Continental Resilience
Held at the EUI Event Center, the forum provided a dedicated space for African Chiefs of Army and international partners to confront the continent’s most urgent security threats. Discussions throughout the three-day event centered on:
Asymmetric Warfare: Strategies to defeat insurgency, violent extremism, and hybrid threats through intelligence-sharing and rapid-response mechanisms.
Border & Territorial Security: Coordinated efforts to combat transnational crime, weapons smuggling, and organized banditry.
Force Modernization: Leveraging artificial intelligence, drone technology, and satellite-based ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) to enhance battlefield awareness and data-driven decision-making.
Bridging Technology and Defense
Alongside the strategic dialogues, the forum featured a world-class international exhibition. Global defense technology leaders showcased state-of-the-art innovations, including advanced armored platforms, digitized command-and-control infrastructure, and cyber-resilience tools. For the Nigerian Armed Forces and their regional counterparts, the event offered a unique opportunity for technology transfer and the exploration of sustainable defense ecosystems.
Strengthening Strategic Partnerships
In his address to the delegates, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, highlighted the importance of these collaborative efforts. "The challenges we face terrorism, piracy, and border insecurity do not recognize national boundaries. Our response, therefore, must be equally borderless and collaborative," he noted.
The forum concluded on a high note, with delegates strengthening bilateral ties through a series of closed-door sessions and one-to-one meetings between military leadership and defense providers. The visiting international delegation joined the national leadership today at the Port Harcourt Polo Club for the official Grand Finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration.
The successful hosting of such a high-profile international event underscores Port Harcourt’s growing influence as a premier destination for strategic dialogue and regional development.
