Relief has finally come the way of students at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) as the institution's management officially withdrew its earlier circular that announced a blanket suspension of all non-academic student activities.
In a fresh directive issued by the university administration, it was confirmed that all approved academic programs, departmental events, and campus student activities will continue normally without further interruption.
Clearing the Air on the SUG Crisis
The initial apprehension stemmed from administrative friction surrounding the Students' Union Government (SUG). Following disagreements involving the dissolved executive council, the Chief Judge, and the Speaker of the Students' Representative Council over the composition of the electoral committee compounded by allegations regarding the management of union funds management stepped in to dissolve the former executive council.
To restore order and pave the way for a smooth transition, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Princewill Chike, moved swiftly to reconstitute a brand-new Students' Union Government Electoral Committee (ELECO).
A Path Forward
Following productive consultations between university authorities and representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), assurances have been given that the path to a credible, transparent student election is fully back on track.
Students and campus stakeholders have been advised to disregard the previous memo and throw their weight behind the new electoral process as campus life returns to its vibrant routine.
