Breaking News: Rivers State is officially stepping into a brighter, greener future! In a major development for our local communities, the Federal Government, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has officially broken ground on four new solar hybrid mini-grid projects.
These state-of-the-art projects, supported by the World Bank under the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) Programme, are set to provide reliable, clean electricity to over 13,492 households, businesses, and public institutions across the state.
Where is the Light Coming To?
The initial phase of this initiative will bring consistent power supply to the following communities:
Bolo/Wakama
Gokana/Khana
Ogu/ChukuAma
Onne
Why This Matters:
Representing Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Nma Odu praised the project as a testament to the productive collaboration between the Federal and Rivers State Governments.
Key benefits of this 11.9MWp combined capacity project include:
Economic Growth: Reliable power to support local fishing, small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), and local markets.
Improved Public Services: Enhanced electricity for healthcare facilities and schools in the target areas.
Environmental Sustainability: A significant step in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and embracing renewable energy.
The REA Managing Director, Dr. Abba Aliyu, noted that these new projects complement the agency’s existing footprint in Rivers State, which already includes 16 completed renewable energy projects and the massive 10.5MW solar hybrid plant at the University of Port Harcourt, which is now ready for commissioning.
For the residents of these communities, this isn't just about electricity it’s about unlocking the potential of our local economy and improving the daily lives of families across the state.
