The Presidency has raised the alarm over what it describes as a fraudulent scheme, warning Nigerians and international organizations to disregard the purported appointment of a certain Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi by a body styling itself as the “Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.”
In a State House statement issued on Thursday, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, stated categorically that the alleged organization does not exist under the administration of President Bola Tinubu and that no such appointment was ever made.
The Full Disclaimer
“It has come to the notice of the Federal Government of Nigeria and specifically the Office of the Chief of Staff to His ExcellencyPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR that a certain Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, under the auspices of an alleged organization styled as the ‘Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council’ is portraying himself to the general public as having been appointed by my office,” Gbajabiamila stated.
“The unsuspecting public is hereby advised to note that such an office does not exist under this administration and no appointment has been made in that regard,” he added.
Who Is Being Warned?
The Chief of Staff’s disclaimer was directed at a notably wide audience a signal of how seriously the Presidency is treating the matter. Those specifically advised to take note include:
• Foreign and diplomatic missions
• Financial and multilateral institutions
• Development organizations
• Security agencies
• Members of the general public
The breadth of that warning suggests the alleged impostor may have been actively engaging or attempting to engage with international bodies and financial institutions under the cover of the fabricated appointment.
Why This Matters
Impersonation of government officials and the creation of fictitious government agencies is not a new phenomenon in Nigeria, but cases that reach the level of a formal Presidency disclaimer are particularly serious. When fake government appointments are used to interface with foreign missions, multilateral organizations, or financial institutions, the consequences can range from reputational damage to Nigeria’s international standing, to outright fraud against unsuspecting organizations and individuals.
For residents of Port Harcourt and across Rivers State where awareness of such scams is critically important this serves as a timely reminder: always verify the existence and legitimacy of any government agency or official before entering into any engagement, financial or otherwise.
The EFCC and relevant security agencies are expected to take note of the Presidency’s disclaimer and investigate accordingly.
How to Verify Government AppointmentsIf you ever receive communication from someone claiming a government appointment or affiliation, here are simple verification steps.
