The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has officially stepped into a new chapter of leadership. Professor Chike Princewill Chike was formally sworn in as the 10th Vice-Chancellor of the institution this week, marking a pivotal moment for the university community.
In an inaugural address that resonated with both staff and students, Professor Chike set a tone of strict discipline and high ambition, unveiling a comprehensive eight-point strategic agenda aimed at transforming the institution into a globally respected center of excellence.
A New Strategic Blueprint
Professor Chike’s administration plans to focus on institutional renewal through eight core pillars, including:
Academic Excellence & Quality Assurance: Raising the standard of teaching and learning.
Research & Innovation: Translating knowledge into real-world impact.
Digital Transformation: Implementing ICT-driven governance across campus.
Institutional Harmony & Inclusive Leadership: Fostering a collaborative environment for all stakeholders.
Additional focus areas: Including internationalization and enhanced student support services.
Zero Tolerance for Misconduct
Beyond the strategic vision, the new Vice-Chancellor issued a stern warning to those threatening the university’s reputation. Addressing students and staff directly, he declared that his tenure would operate with zero tolerance for:
Cultism and Criminality: He explicitly urged any student involved in cult groups to disengage immediately, warning that such activities jeopardize both the campus peace and their own futures.
Academic and Ethical Misconduct: Professor Chike warned staff members against sexual harassment, fraud, bribery, and "sex for grades," stating clearly that those unable to work under a "clean slate" should exit the institution.
"The council members are watching us. If you cannot work under a clean slate, then you may have to leave," the VC stated, emphasizing that he expects the university community to uphold the highest levels of integrity.
A Call to Global Ambition
A proud alumnus of UNIPORT himself, Professor Chike challenged the university community to aim higher than ever before. He encouraged staff and students to strive for global recognitions, such as Nobel Prizes, insisting that world-class achievements are entirely attainable right here in Port Harcourt.
As the university approaches its Golden Jubilee, this administration signals a commitment to moving beyond traditional challenges and positioning UNIPORT as a top-tier global competitor.
