PORTHARCOURTBLOG ALERT: Flash Flood Warning Issued for Rivers State as Ogbogoro Residents Seek Relief

Community Alert: With the peak of the 2026 rainy season upon us, residents across Rivers State are being urged to exercise extreme caution. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent public advisory warning of severe flash flood risks across the state, effective since July 10.

Why the High Alert?

Persistent and heavy rainfall throughout June has left our soil heavily saturated and unable to absorb further precipitation. As a result, any additional downpours are likely to trigger rapid surface runoff, leading to localized flooding in low-lying areas, urban centers, and coastal communities.

The Ogbogoro Situation

The impact of this season is already being felt acutely in Ogbogoro Community (Obio/Akpor LGA), where residents have been battling persistent flooding.

During a recent emergency inspection tour, the Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Works, led by Hon. Dame Emilia Amadi, identified the primary culprits behind the devastation:

Failed Drainage Systems: Outdated or blocked channels are unable to manage the current volume of water.

Deplorable Access Roads: Poor road infrastructure is exacerbating the buildup of stagnant water.

Hon. Amadi described the situation as an "SOS emergency," emphasizing that the House is committed to providing the legislative support needed to fix these systems before further property damage or loss of life occurs. The Committee has urged the Commissioner for Works, Prof. Temple Nwofor, to expedite intervention plans, which are reportedly already under consideration by the Governor.

Stay Safe: What You Should Do

As we navigate this rainy season, please keep the following tips in mind:

Keep Drains Clear: Ensure gutters around your home and business are free from refuse to allow free water flow.

Monitor Local Updates: Stay tuned to PORTHARCOURTBLOG for real-time alerts.

Avoid Floodwaters: Do not attempt to walk or drive through flooded roads, as visibility and depth can be deceptive.

Secure Loose Items: Move vulnerable equipment or goods to higher ground.

We are monitoring the situation in Ogbogoro and across the state closely. If your area is experiencing significant flooding, let us know in the comments or send us a message.
