Port Harcourt Legal Update: EFCC Takes Action on Refinery Fraud and Property Scams

The fight against corruption in Rivers State has intensified this July, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) making significant moves against both high-profile financial mismanagement and local property fraud.

Refinery Boss Arraigned in Major Money Laundering Probe

The EFCC has officially arraigned Ahmed Dikko, the former Managing Director of the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC), before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The Charges: Dikko faces 12 counts of money laundering involving the alleged diversion of funds earmarked for the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery.

The Details: According to prosecutors, the former refinery chief allegedly received payments from contractors and used funds suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activity to acquire property in Abuja.

Bail Status: Justice Inyang Ekwo has granted Dikko bail in the sum of ₦150 million. The conditions require a surety who is a responsible citizen and owns landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

This arraignment is part of a broader, high-stakes investigation into the management of state-owned refineries, with the EFCC having traced billions in cash and assets throughout the probe.

Crackdown on Local Land Fraud

Closer to home, the EFCC’s Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate is actively pursuing individuals involved in deceptive property schemes.

Case Update: Recently, the Port Harcourt division of the Federal High Court saw the arraignment of two brothers, Cypril Nwalaezi and Smart Chinedu Nwalaezi.

The Allegations: The duo faces a five-count charge related to conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretenses in a land fraud case totaling ₦3.2 million.
